As the city faces increasing risks of heavy storms and flooding, it is crucial to work towards comprehensive, community-based solutions to manage stormwater. Green infrastructure is a stormwater management system that mimics nature by soaking up and storing stormwater while providing flood protection, cleaner water, and natural habitat. Both the City and community groups are working towards providing more opportunities for green infrastructure in neighborhoods across the city.
Rain gardens project
A group of local nonprofits — CRC, Grassroots Ecology, and Fresh Approach — are installing rain gardens for free in addition to training local residents on how to install them. Rain gardens are gardens of native plants with modified soil to absorb large amounts of rainwater and reduce flooding while expanding native plant habitat and providing a beautiful garden to residents. Green Infrastructure Plan
The City has passed a Green Infrastructure Plan which details the current status of green infrastructure and stormwater management in the city as well as plans for future expansion of green infrastructure across the city. To view the full plan, see here.
