In addition to Federal Fair Housing Act protections for protected classes (race, color, ancestry/national origin, disability, sex, and familial status), California law offers protections for age, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, genetic information, marital status, military or veteran status, and source of income (including federal housing assistance vouchers). DFEH receives, evaluates, and investigates fair housing complaints against protected classes, including those not included in federal legislation and therefore not investigated by HUD. The local enforcement organizations such as Project Sentinel, Legal Aid Society of San Mateo County, and Community Legal Services in East Palo Alto also support fair housing enforcement. If you would like assistance in finding who to contact, call (650) 853-3189 to reach the Rent Stabilization or Housing Division.
If your case is code enforcement-related and is not covered by the Rent Stabilization Program, you may contact Building/Code Enforcement. Call (650) 853-3189 to be referred to the right staff person.
